A real time tunnel?  Odds are you were hearing rumors about the
underground base used for and by the aliens. 
The TV series was inspired by the Theodore Sturgeon novel "The Time
Tunnel."  It was published in about 1962.  As I remember the book,
none of the characters made it to the screen, and the basic premise
was quite different.
The TV series was brought to us by the same bunch who created "Lost
in Space," which should explain the quality of "Time Tunnel."
