I seem to recall reading that that identifies the archive type only by
the filename extension, rather than by the internal signature. If that's
the case, it makes it difficult to use it in cases where the archive
doesn't use the default extension (such as Fido packets and offline mail
packets, to mention two obvious examples).

The last I knew, the only documentation available for ARJZ was in
Russian. In most of the world, that severely limits its usefulness.
