IIRC ls(1) usually lists modification time, but you can ask for creation or
access time instead, for obvious reasons access time isn't reported
accurately on read-only media. acces time is also optional on wratable
media, mounting with it disabled can speed things up slightly

with 32 bit windows VFAT and NTFS also record access and creation time
resolution, dir normally lists modification time but you can ask for
creation or access timestmps if you want them. IIRC only the date is
recorded for creation.
