Oh, I'd say that we've earned at least Captain
status.

Consider that the US was very late to the Two Great
Wars, in the case of the First one, 70% late.

There was an excellent piece in the Economist, IIRC,
about two years ago, that pointed out the real cause
of turmoil in much of the Arab world.

A near total lack of economic success, leading to a
generation of young men, having been promised leading
roles in society by their religion, having... nothing
that actually matched that.

Rich people can be weaned away from fundamentalism.
Poor people, told that they are great, but seeing
that they are not, in the day to day meaning of that,
have lots of time and little else to do, but complain
and behave badly.

Hmm... Sounds like the founding of Feminism, doesn't
it ?
