I welcome comments as I don't know if this is a virus or not.
I downloaded a file called showdup.zip from the internet.
I have and still use the version of this program I had before.
I thought the one I downloaded might be a later version.
I unpacked the zip file and ran it through XTreegold.
The harddrive was being accessed for a long time, so I eventually turned off
the computer.
When I rebooted, the file command.com could not be found.
Booting from a floppy showed the file command.com was on the harddrive.
Upon further investigation, I found a lot of exe and com files were longer in
size, but not all of them.
I formatted the drive and installed the backup I had, which was a bit old,
ut
never mind, that's my fault for not backing up regularly.
All seemed to be OK until the same thing happened again, with the same
results.
Looking inside a faulty file showed the letters hol towards the end of every
faulty file, as well as a lot of code that didn't belong to the original
le.
After several attempts at getting things right, I decided to fdisk the drive
and remove the partitions and create them again, after installing the backup
this finally fixed the problem.
I threw away the showdup.zip file when I thought this was the problem file.
So I don't know if the file did have a virus.
Running several virus programs while I had the altered files didn't show any
viruses.
So I don't know what was wrong.
Cheers,
Bert
