subject: Server questions

Some senseless babbling from Larry Evans to Mike Ruskai
on 07-20-97 08:44 about Server questions...
MR> Vmodem), a FTP server (using Penguin FTP now - would like to know
MR> any alternatives believed to be better), and a HTTP server (Apache
 MR> 1.1.3).
LE> We run ZFTPD, as I found that PENFTP caused odd hangs and is a bit
LE> cranky from time to time. ZFTP is much faster and altough a bit of a
LE> nuisance to work with it still beats penftp hands down for speed and
 LE> durability.
The thing that I like about Penguin is the way it handles drives in OS/2 -
it treats them as directories, so that f:\tcpip would be /f/tcpip. I have
a copy of ZFTP sitting here, so I'll have a look at it.
 MR> The questions:

MR> 1) Anyone know of good SMTP/POP3 server software that is free or
MR> nearly free? My goal is free e-mail for my BBS users.
 LE> Hethmon Brothers mail server.
Have that set up, currently inactive. The price tag is a bit steep for
someone who's about to become a poor college student. Unless I find
something else, though, I'll bite the bullet, because it's an excellent
package.

MR> 2) Anyone know a good newsgroup fido gating program? I've
MR> tried something called NGATE, but it's ridiculously slow
MR> retrieving news - only about 1500-4000 bytes per second, whereas
MR> my newsreader routinely pulls 120,000 bytes per second out of it.
 LE> Watergate.
Got a source for that in case I can't find it?

MR> 3) Is there a version of Apache for OS/2 later than 1.1.3?
LE> Ya got me there, we run a tiny little free web server that seems to do
LE> the job. I'll try to dig up the name for you. Check the site.
Does it support CGI?
