Looking at the genetic code I notice this
"...start codon (is) AUG... Other rarely used start codons
are (AUU, GUG, UUG)"  van Holde, Mathews

Note that none of these start codons have C. Matter of
fact the only XUX condons that didn't work as both stop
and amino acid coding was CXX or Leu and Phe (UUU, UUC)
Also no stop has a C - UAA, UAG, UGA.

In both examples I see a lot of purines (A,G) and some
U but no C.

I think this points to C as being a late arrival to
the code - or perhaps the last base to arrive.
