-= Pete Replied to Nev Millican about: Dynalink modems =-

G'day Nev

 NM> Does anyone have experience with Dynalink modems? I came across
 NM> this add recently on a BBS. Although they seem very cheap, I
 NM> was wondering what one would get for the money. Following are
 NM> the details from the add.

 NM> Dynalink V.34  28,800 External FaxModem $310
 NM> Dynalink V.34+ 33,600 Internal FaxModem $275.
~~~  ^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^
AFAIK The V34+ unit is just a rebadged USR Sportster.
 NM> It is claimed that they are US robotics compatible, Austel
 NM> Approved and have a 5 year warranty.
As their made by USR i guess they'd have to be compatable with USR's
 NM> My questions are:
 NM> 1. are they worth buying or just too good to be true?
 NM> 2. are 33.6k modems worth buying anyway because of the telephone
 NM>    system we have in Australia.
It depends on your phone lines but many people get > 28800 with USR's
 NM> That is assuming of course that someone can be found to connect with.
You can connect with Anyone out there with a Courier, sportster etc.
that supports v34+
 NM> I currently use a Maestro 14.4 but it will cost around $250 to
 NM> convert it to 28.8k.  This is of course just $25 less than a
 NM> brand new Dynalink 33.6 as mentioned above.  This is the reason
 NM> for asking.
 NM> Hoping someone can assist.
Just my opinion but i'd go for the Dynalink v34+, be aware that there
is a bug in the v42bis code or at least there was in the sportsters
but turning that off via the &K switch will overcome it.
