Do we have any way of knowing what those places are if they are not
eyes?

This was my conclusion, given that the eyes are eyes and the brain is
therefore limited in size.

That does explain things a bit.... But then we are faced with the problem
of explaining such are large-scale event.
The general difficulty I have with abductions as subjects of scientific
research is the difficulty of data collection. Except in some peripheral
aspects of the events, we have no way of *knowing* any facts beyond any
doubt.
