Hi David. Actually, Amos and Andy is beginning to acquire a following
among blacks. After all, you are a better person for the ability to laugh
at yourself occasionally. As for your question about why the unemployment
rate among the blind is so high, this is probably one of those questions
that has many answers. Certainly, your observations are correct as far as
they go. I have also been rejected for jobs, I feel, because of my
blindness. This could have been due to negative stereotyping, or to simple
ignorance of the skills and techniques that blind pedrsons use to
accomplish tasks. Also, like me, many blind persons have received poor
advise from parents, family members, teachers, and counselors about their
true potential. They grow up with their own negative stereotypes about
themselves. Attacking movies like Mr. Magoo addresses problems in a small
way, but the real task is to change blind persons' atitudes about
blindness, and themselves.
