It's quite simple.
You said, the US has nothing to look under the sand with.
I said, they do.
You said, why didn't they use it then?
I said, because of its limitations. Those limitations dictate that to use
it effectively they have to know more or less where to look.
Now, to your current question:
For all we know, they may actually be using it to look at specific areas.
But the planes were found by chance, they weren't looking for them.
