"The Smarts behind Smart Phones"
Communication News (04/97)
P. 12; Pipes, Kerry
Nokia, Ericsson, NEC, and Motorola all are developing smart phones
that employ an operating system designed by the California company
Geoworks. A smart phone integrates the abilities of a pager, cellular
phone, and computer, giving a user data, fax, paging, e-mail, and
Internet services. Geoworks first attracted attention in the 1980's
when it developed the original software solution for online innovator
America Online. But after fighting a losing battle with Microsoft in
the PC market during the early '90's, the company altered it's course
in 1993 when current CEO Gordon Mayer arrived and shifted the
company's focus to the cellular and paging industry. Mayer says that now
"three of the four major manufacturers" are deploying Geoworks'
products in their smart phones.
While smart phones have yet to make much of an impact in the United
States, Mayer notes that the products are selling well in Europe and
Asia, where the devices were launched last March. Mayer predicts that
smart phone sales could reach 75 million units a year in five years,
but he does not think smart phones will make pagers and cellular
phones obsolete. Mayer explains that smart phones will not supplant
cellular phones, rather they will "enhance them".
Geoworks could face competition from its old nemesis Microsoft with
that company's Windows CE application, but Mayer downplays the threat
from Microsoft. Mayer explains that Windows CE is meant for handheld
PCs, while a smart phone is a "communicator", which he says is " a
night-and-day difference".
