DU projectiles partly vapourise on impact. The hot vapour "burns", creating
*very* fine uranium oxide dust - much finer than smoke particles. Walking
across it will stir it up into the air where it will "float" like
smoke. Easy to breathe it in. According to the IAEA, inhaling one hundredth
of a gram will give you your annual allowable radiation dose in one hit.
