| subject: | `ACTIVE` modems |
AP> ATI3 CL-MD1414AT/EC AP> So - lucky or not? Unlucky. That appears to be a Cirrus Logic-based modem. It isn't RPI, but it is bad news -- well, let me qualify that. Cirrus are a small market player in modem semiconductors. They aren't supported terribly well and they do not have a loyal following. They also made some unbelievably stupid design decisions in some of their earlier chipsets (eg hard-wiring country-specific features). When you upgrade to 28k8, try not to go for a Cirrus 8-) Odd, I thought Active modems were Rockwells. Hmm. AP> My main problem in operation is receiving faxes from certain machines. Some AP> (mainly traditional machines) are OK but a friend in Canberra can only AP> connect occasionally. The process hangs in the "receiving fax I.D." stage. Lock your end to receive faxes no faster than 9600bps. Most real fax machines only support 9600 anyway. -- Lewin A.R.W.
