Frankly, I'd prefer to use hardware RAID for its performance.  Use of
OS-supplied RAID is similar to using disk compression, IMHO, since it 
equires
CPU and drivers to support and utilize it.  A hardware RAID solution looks
like a single SCSI device to the OS and the rest is automatic.
