Thanks for your advice on the whip antenna. I wound up getting one from Radio
Shack that does improve reception somewhat. Now to try another radio. 
Unfortunately many higher end GM radios in junk yards have a strange 
rectangular shape, and do not fit into the normal radio hole with control 
knobs on either side. I may just bite the bullet and buy an expensive radio 
just to get good reception. The Ford Taurus comes with a fantastic radio. I 
wonder if it can be bought separately and who makes it.
