... and a bit more than four years ago, some folks here were frothing about
how a cruise missile would be just the ticket for the Chinese airbase where
our recon plane had been forced down. It was a crisp new administration,
and the President and NS adviser Rice were focused like lasers on the
Chinese menace, not that silly terrorist stuff Sandy Berger and Richard
Clarke were pestering them with.

That would have been a poor substitute for their ideal, i.e. to have taken
China on thirty years sooner as part of Really Winning in Viet Nam, or
A-bombed it fifty years sooner as part of Really Winning in Korea. But hey,
better late than never.
