I use MultiMail (duh) and ztelnet.

ztelnet is rather primitive, but it works. Before that, I'd been using
Minicom (a Telix clone), in combination with a tty telnet shim (needed
because Minicom natively works only with serial ports); but for some
strange reason, that only worked with some boards and not others.
All open-source, of course, and all written in C or C++, so it's marignally
on-topic. ;-)
