On 02-02-98, MICHAEL MCSORLEY declared to ROBERT PLETT:
MM> DH> I had always thought that it was fog, not smog.
MM> RP> Nope. It's tree pollution. |-)
MM>This is intriguing. How does that work? Have the trees of east Tennessee
MM>industrialized? Or did they have a batch of that 16 bean soup? ;-P
Each is a major chemical factory in its own right, therefore one could
say they've *always* been industrialized. Another example: It's been
said that the pigment that colors leaves in the fall is of such strength
that if all of it in a single large tree could be isolated and made into
paint, enough could be produced to paint New York city.
I don't recall what all the stuff is they exude into the air in the
Smokies, but do know the compounds are oily and given off along with
water vapor, the combination producing the characteristic blue haze for
which the region was named.
