Sand dries thing out when it's buried in it for one, and for another,
aboveground vehicles usually move around, flexing those boots and that
keeps it pliable so they don't crack as easily. that said, I bet there's
lots of failures on aboveground vehicles too, that environment is harsh.

In normal usage, maybe (I've had failures), but bury them for awhile...
