>I am having a hard time buying the idea of squid in the water building a=20
technology too. OK our squid are mentalists on the other of the Ane,=20
but telekinetic ability is the thing. They can manipulate at the=20
genetic level and build creatures not machines.

That's one interpretation. Another would be to see if is possible to build=
 a technology
underwater without fire as we know it and the products that result. I like=
 the idea of
breeding animals that produce shells, and perhaps manipulating that to crea= te
creatures that are essentially factories. It is also possible that
chemica= l reactions
could be manipulated to produce the desired end products. It would be hard=
 for
us to imagine how this would work because it would be truly alien.

Of course, any story involving sentient squids would need something more th= an just
a very strange first contact. I like the idea but I haven't written the
st= ory yet, since
I really don't have a story to tell. Nevertheless, it's in the back of my
= mind, waiting
for that day when inspiration strikes and I find I have a story worth
telli= ng involving
the squids. Who knows how long it will take. Squids developing a non-
technological but sentient society (like the Ane, especially the
Steve-Trek=
 interpre-
tation of them) could also be the way to go. They might have telepathic po= wers.
Then again, I've already done that with jellyfish.
