The BBS and/or echomail messaging probably had less appeal than  
the new kid in town - internet.  Even access to the internet  
via POTS had much fewer busy-signal woes.

And then, the new fun toy - a smartphone, started to attract  
the masses.

WRT fidonet of packet radio, I had not heard of the effort. Was  
it announced in any of the Fidonews issues?
