I am not familiar with some of the equipment.  It could have some
interactions.  I have an old InPort card.  It only uses limited
interrupts.  You don't have it sharing one with your sound card, for
example, do you?  That certainly would cause problems.

Exactly.  It won't work with every card though.  The card has to support
VESA modes in hardware.  For example, an older Trident 8900C card won't
support the higher color mode in anything but 1024x768, which makes
things just too small for my eyes when viewed on a 15 inch monitor.  If
I had a larger one, then it would be OK.  In 800x600, I can only get 16
colors.  OTOH, with the Cirrus Logic card, I can get the higher colors
in all video modes, but have the swapping problem.
