| subject: | Troubles with Simple modems |
I've two would-be callers who just can't connect to my Dataplex DPX596, 3.50 firmware; both running Simple modems. The other (I think) is a V.34, but the one I've been struggling with this afternoon is a 288F model, V.FC only. Symptoms remind me of the same sort of problem negotiating V.32bis that I had years ago calling the later Interlink modems (though they could call me ok). I tried calling this beastie several times too, no joy .. goes into the long clear-down tone after each try, and only tries a time and a half anyway, calling or called. Both these fellas are on the same line, maybe 12km? out. It's pretty loud, though fairly clear .. some possibility of there being an amp on the line; he mentioned they may have done some bandwidth-sharing tricks (ADPCM, I suppose). We did also try for an F6 (4800 V.32) connect; same result, so not bandwidth. Both these folks have no trouble connecting at 14400 to another local BBS, that runs a Maestro 144FM; seems Simples don't like mine, as setup anyway. I'm at a loss as what I might try this end .. Not sure yet exactly how it's setup, but we did note that AT&F set it as &C0 &D0, so maybe some other current settings are funny; he did buy it as an ex-demo unit from Harvey Norman . Will try it from AT&F, if someone can recommend a good basic setup for these gadgets (apart from obvious &C1&D2)? I'd suspect pilot error, but for the fact that the other fella mentioned is a sysop, who knows what he's about, and has tried lots. Any clues, wizards?
