Or being cynical, the 'muscle' of the advertising $'s spent. CCD also takes
a fast image of a planet so that the effects of 'seeing' can be minimized.
Plus with ccd you can stack images and manipulate them.  This is not the
same thing that you will get at the eyepiece during those rare moments. 
Some of the best images of planets I have seen are done with cam corders by
a guy on disability who has the time to sit and go through LOTS of frames.
