Radon itself is relatively harmless.  It's chemically inert, being in the
Noble Gases like helium or argon, and the amount that lingers in the lungs
multiplied by time is quite small in almost any environment.  The problem
is that the radon which IS in the lungs decays into polonium, a radioactive
metal which DOES stay long-term in the lungs, burning up tissue.
