SK> -> *5 RACE NEUTRAL: TEXAS A.G. ISSUES COLLEGE GUIDELINES
SK> -> Texas Attorney General Dan Morales last week issued a set of
SK> -> race-neutral guidelines to colleges that would help boost
SK> -> minority enrollment while complying with the law (Moreno, THE
SK> -> DALLAS MORNING NEWS, 8/22). According to Morales, the guidelines
SK> -> would conform to a recent U.S. Supreme Court decision that
SK> -> outlawed race-based affirmative action programs used by
SK> -> universities in Texas, La., and Miss. Morales addressed his
SK> -> guidelines to Leonard Rauch, chairman of the Texas Higher
SK> -> Education Coordinating Board.
SK> -> Specifically, Morales said schools may use factors such as
SK> -> age, gender, family history, socioeconomic history and the level
SK> of
SK> -> education achieved by the applicant's parents
That (other than gender-based preferences!) is fair.
What is unfair is giving admission preferences to the sons and daughters
of black executives, at the expense of sons and daughters of white coal
miners!
