 1. Telemate is better than telix
 2. My 14400 can run at 57600 but that's the DTE speed, but the dce speed  
  (modem to modem speed) is still 14400. Often you can get at least 3000
cps     on text files, but that's due to the compression
 3. Your modem is probably set up to report the DTE speed not the DCE speed
       for the connect speed....

It seems that you haven't had much experience with configuring modems....
