I also tried numerous ways to remove rouge from the bevel and side of my
6" mirror to no avail.  Also got alot of advice, the best of which was
to let the firm that's going to aluminize your mirror take care of it.
 I sent mine away to Moonward Vacuum Coatings in
Ontario, Canada and they did a fantastic job of cleaning the mirror.  They
told me how to do it myself, but I couldn't find the particular product
that they use.

They've got to try to remove that stuff prior to aluminization because it
will contaminate their vacuum chamber.
