Mr. Norton seems to be partial to .300 Savage (for assorted reasons) but I
don't think he views .308 chambering as a "weakness", just not as desireable
(for his purposes) as the .300 Savage. MY Mileage *Does* Vary... and if the
.308 Savages are the cheapest ones at gun shows, IMHO that's just another
example of the overall trend of people to be foolish. The two ctges. are
almost "peas in a pod" ballistically (with a slight edge to the .308), but
.308 (and 7.62 NATO) ammo is dirt-cheap and plentiful, while .300 ammo is
hard to find and you HAVE TO reload to get the most out of the cartridge.
All I can figure is, it's a "nostalgia" thing. The .300 Savage and .250
Savage are the "classic" rounds for the 99, so that's what people want. Go
figure.
In any case, I'm only paying $150 + shipping for my little 99 in .308, yeah
basically the same price as a used .30-30, so I'll just use it a few years
and see how well it holds up. Whether it's "collectible" or not, I really
don't care. :-)
