It wasn't doctored, but upon close inspection (of both video and still) I
think it was his index finger.  No way was it his thumb.  I would prefer to
think the worst, but it doesn't work this time (I have had my share of
spontaneous gestures/statements backfire on me, although not with national
repercussions!)
