From what I've been able to cobble together, without any serious effort
because it's not really as interesting a story as the Dems are painting it;
it seems the Dems are implying that it was so close because Reps voted for
their guy because they're unhappy with Bush, thus they are going to
"kick ass" in 2006 (oh wait, they dropped that juvenile name for
their official "blog" didn't they?).

The reality is, as you noted, the Reps weren't chomping at the bit to vote
for a RINO in an off year election for a seat of miniscule importance, so
they made popcorn at home instead -- it's most certainly not the implied
case, that they turned out to vote for the other guy against her.
