Nothing wrong with a stealthy approach if it gets you where you want
to go.
I don't think you need to worry about lilo. I did use lilo myself
years ago with other distros like mandrake and red hat but I have
been using grub since I started using debian about 5 years ago and
it works fine. It is the default in debian for reasons I can't remember
now.
