On my debian box I have to add my own user (and any others) to the
"scanner" group. Once I've done that I need to log out of my current
session and log back in again and after that I can use the scanner.
The "scanner" group doesn't even exist until xsane (or similar) is
installed. I don't know if that's the case for you but have a look
at /etc/group and see if your user is in that group. If not a command
like.. "usermod -a -G scanner " will add the user to
that group.
