< What are we working on today? Project check! What's in play for you?
The tenth or eleventh draft of the first STAR TREK: ULYSSES story.=20

Thankfully, most of the drafts were short (1,000 or so words) when I junked=
them.

rek (as opposed to the drek that the TV series have been dredging out since=

I am curious. How do you mean Good Trek? What makes good Trek for you? >
That's a difficult question to answer. It seems like since DS9 finished,
th= e series since then haven't had something that the first three shows
had. V= oyager and, to a greater degree, Enterprise aren't even good
sci-fi, let al= one good Star Trek.=20
There have been exceptions (Carbon Creek from Enterprise and, er, um, there=
must be some good Voyager episodes) but for the most part, they just don't=
seem like good Trek.=20=20
< I just junked 10,000+ words (as well as most of the main characters) of t=

a fair while to complete. I'll probably post a bit at a time so that I'll =
at least have a few other opinions.
try an outline first
Also a good question to ask is "What decision does the central
character ma= ke to resolve this?"
Just some ideas. I know it's a good story when I can see the ending in my=
mind. I know I am not on the right track when I can't. >
I've got the basic idea of the story down pat, it's just that I can't get
t= he main characters right (and if you have a set of pointless main
character= s, you wind up with Enterprise). It doesn't help that I wrote
10,000+ words=
of a story about a non-Starfleet trading ship, then read the basic plot fo=
r Firefly and had to junk it due to a distinct similarity between the two.
For starters, here's the outline for the first story.
STAR TREK ULYSSES
The year is 2372. The Akira-Class U.S.S Ulysses (NCC-76442) is on patrol in=
the Tigora Sector when it enters a, previously unknown, wormhole.
The ship exits the wormhole in the Delta Quadrant, 73,000 light years away
= from home. Upon arrival, the crew discovers the following:
- The wormhole has been destabilised by the Ulysses passing through the wor=
mhole and will collapse within a hour.
- The ship is within a solar system which a 7 mile-wide asteroid is passing=
through, en route to the 4th planet. Unfortunately, the planet is a M-Clas=
s planet with a pre-warp civilization of 6 million people on board.
- Destroying the asteroid is possible, but not in time to get back to the w=
ormhole in time to get home.
- The ship receives a distress call from the planet requesting help from an=
yone who hears the call.
The crew are in a situation where, if they go back into the wormhole, they
= get home but 6 million people are doomed. They are in muddy waters Prime
Di= rective wise because it is interfering in a pre-warp civilization but
they = have received a distress call.=20
The Captain has to deal with the fact that, if he doesn't go back through
t= he wormhole, the crew is looking at a 80 year trip home. In the end, the
Ca= ptain decides that he has to destroy the asteroid and dooms the crew to
a l= ong, lonely, trip home.
The stories will cover the crew's attempts to get home.
