Hello Sarah -

Gee, now I'm wondering what ELIST means within FidoNet. ;-)

An 'elist' is short for 'email listing'. Basically all
communication is via your email software for both reading and
writing of replies to the ongoing discussions.

The reference to "lurking" means to only receive messages but
never reply to any nor initiate any discussions.
