>Speaking of Terkos stories. My interest in the Trek universe goes=20
beyond what happens to people in uniforms on starships. I want to know=20
how Joe Earth lives or Joe Vulcan. (Or would that be T'Joe Vulcan?)=20
What about those faces they never attach anything to, Andorians or=20
Tellerites? RPGs have made an attempt to put some flesh on the spare=20
bones, and I gladly make use of all the materials I can lay my hands on.=20
My son commented on the number ot Star Trek Reference books I own.=20
About 50 or so. Reference books, not novels. There is some good world=20
building in the FASA Trek and LUG Trek. I'll take it from whence it comes.
That's true, looking into other lives would be interesting, but a Romulan
e= xpatriate
on a space station (I'm assuming it's at El Nanth, but it's hard to keep
th= ese things
straight without rereading) is not exactly Joe Earth or his Vulcan wife
T'J= oe Vulcan.
Given his situation, he'd be presenting a unique and different view on this=
universe,
not a typical view of the average human on Earth.
I have encorporated some scenes that focus on this civilian position in the
Federatiion in the stories, including the scenes on Tiberius in "The
Memory=
of the
Man." An upcoming story has Indesakar paying his father a visit at
the fam= ily home
in India. I like scenes like that, since it does allow the reader to
relat= e something a
bit closer to his life than the average life on board a Starfleet vessel.
I own nowhere near the same number of reference books, excluding for the mo= st
part the RPG books, since I never got involved in role-playing games. I
ha= ve a few, and
I read through their information on places like Betazed, Andor and the rest=
, and then
fit it into what I might have already established on the places. In canon,=
Earth and
Vulcan are well-understood, while in Steve-Trek anyway, so is Kent. Andor = and
Tellar are more open, although I have views on both of these races that are=
expressed
in the stories. I'm looking forward to that upcoming episode of
"Enterpris= e" that is
supposed to show an Andorian ship. I wonder how much they resemble what I = feel
Andorian ships are supposed to look like.
>This is where the Terkos stories came from. I didn't intend ot write=20
more about the Romulan expatriate, but he demanded more of a say.
"The=20 Price" got written. High Crystal Station, which I never
intended as a=20 story setting suddenly had things being written about it.
Then Jay fed=20 me conversation he wrote between an unnamed nuisance and
Terkos. I gave=20 the nuisance a name and wrote about him and "The
Duel" came out of it.=20
Cinderella had her foot wear mistranslated and "Murder in the Rue de=20
Verre" was created.
That would make him an interesting character, perhaps because he presents
t= he unique
view, almost the "stranger in a strange land" approach used in
Trek by putt= ing aliens
on human ships. He would not really represent the common view, though. Wh= en you
create interesting settings and interesting characters, stories do get
writ= ten. I've
thought the same way about Starbase G1. It could be interesting. I could = put some
interesting people on it and tell stories about it, but I doubt it would be=
as interesting
if it was a run-of-the-mill station with a run-of-the-mill crew. Anyway, I=
'll give the
latest story, "Murder In the Rue de Verre," a read. I can't
promise that I=
will like it,
but I'll see if it has anything to say to me. Oddly, detective and police
= shows rarely
do. It's just not a genre of story-telling that I can get into.
