Not in all cases. With a wider mission profile, there would be a need for
a larger and more varied crew, necessitating more space for their quarters
and living space. The standard crew for the Oceana Class is 3000.
Also, if, as I have the Oceana Class, the ship is designed to hold a large
compliment of fighter craft and a Defiant Class starship as well as the
ability to act as a mobile drydock for the Intrepid Class and smaller
then the ship's size would need to be larger to accommodate that. Of
course along with these tasks comes the support personnel to provide these
functions.
Someone in an earlier post referred to the Oceana class as a mobile
Starbase. That is probably the best one line description of it.
Realize, I did not create the Oceana Class starship to be the
"ideal" starship. In fact, just the opposite was my intent. It is
what it is because of numerous political and social factors that I think
would be present in the Federation at the end of the Dominion war. It is a
vessel that has had its plumbing "overthought" as Scotty once
remarked about the Excelsior Class. It is a class of ship that has more
expected of it than it could probably ever deliver.
The point of a ship that large for the story is to ask questions about
power, politics, fear, societal pressures, and arrogance.
