subject: SILENT ANSWER AND FAXTALK

Hi David,
Let me know if you get anywhere. Here are some additional tips:
AUTO ANSWER OR FAX RECEPTION PROBLEMS
If you are experiencing difficulties with fax reception or auto answer,
please try the following:
1. What is your initialization string? In FaxTalk, click on
'configure' then 'modem'. Within the string you will see "s0=__"
(s0=). If this is "s0=0", change it to indicate
the number of rings before the modem should answer. In most cases the
initialization string of "at&f2s0=2" (as an example - 2 rings before
answering) is acceptable. If your modem has voice capabilities, you may
try "at&f2s0=2eov1".
2. What is your modem configuration? Be aware of the common IRQ
conflicts listed below. If you have any of these devices, try to
configure the modem so there are no conflicts.
DEVICE IRQ
Soundcard 5,7,9
CD-ROM 15
SCSI 11
PS/2 mouse 12
To reconfigure the modem in Windows 3.1, install the "WINICU Diagnostics
Disk" and run the "Intel ICU Configuration Utility". For Windows 95,
use the System Properties Device Manager (see the help file "device
manager; resource settings".
3. Disable any screen savers or other memory resident programs (such as
virus checkers) that are running in the background. Because such
applications are constantly prompting and probing the system, they will
often interfere with modem/software's ability to answer.
4. What is your Port speed?
- For Windows 95, go to the telephony port setting (control panel;
modems; properties). Select "57600".
- For Windows 3.1/3.11, go to main; control panel; ports. Click on the
comport for the modem and then click on 'settings'. In the baud rate
area, type in '57600'.
5. Close as many other applications as possible. Because fax
transmissions are extremely timing-sensitive, these applications may be
causing problems.
6. If you have additional phones/devices on your phone line, disconnect
them or turn off/decrease the ring volume. Additional phones will often
use so much of the telephone line power that the resulting "faint" ring
cannot be heard by the modem.
7. If using Windows 3.1/3.11, go to the control panel, and click on
"386 enhanced". Select the comport for the modem and check the
'exclusive in the foreground' box.
8. If using Windows 3.1/3.11, check which communications driver you are
currently using:
- From the program manager, click on 'file'. Go to 'run' and type
"sysedit" .
- Close other files until you are at "system.ini". click on 'search'
and then 'find'. Type in "comm.drv" .
- The line found should look something like "comm.drv = xxxxx.xxx".
Unless you recognize the driver used, change it to "comm.drv =
comm.drv".
- Be sure that this is the only communications driver present (i.e.
there are no other lines that say "comm.drv = xxxxx.xxx").
- Exit and save (file; exit; yes). Restart windows.
AUTO-ANSWER TEST
Run a terminal program (like windows terminal) and do the following:
- Be sure the comport settings are correct (settings; communications).
- Type in 'at&f2s0=1' .
- Arrange for someone to call you. You should see the word 'ring' for
an incoming call.
- Then modem should answer.
Thanks,
