Deadline nears for Physics on Stage festival
2 April 2003
Teachers wishing to take part in this year's Physics on Stage
festival need to put their thinking caps on now, as each country's
deadline for proposals is fast approaching.
If you were not one of the 400 plus teachers and education experts
selected from 22 European countries to take part in last year's
Physics on Stage, held at ESA's Space Research and Technical Centre
(ESTEC) in the Netherlands, you may want to know more about this
yearly festival.
Physics on Stage is an initiative of the seven organisations that
make up the European Intergovernmental Research Organisation
(EIROforum), one of which is ESA. The main idea behind Physics on
Stage, first launched in 2000, is to increase interest among school
children in science, and in physics in particular. One of the best
ways of doing this is to make physics fun and more relevant to
everyday life.
The week-long festival, that will again take place at ESTEC,
scheduled for 8-15 November, will bring together some of the most
active and progressive physics teachers in Europe and as usual will
be a lively forum for the exchange of ideas.
Each European country is invited to send a number of delegates to the
festival and to contribute ideas for performances, presentations,
displays and workshops. This means involving not just physics
teachers but also teachers in other disciplines such as biology and
drama. Each national committee is responsible for selecting the most
exciting and inspirational ideas from those received, for sharing at
the fair with an international audience.
The first deadline for receiving performance and workshop proposals
from participating countries is the end of May so check your national
homepage on the Physics on Stage site to see when your entry has to
be in. Do not miss this opportunity to take part in this year's
festival, which has as its theme "Physics and life".
