[ Quoting Jack Stein to Scott Little ]
JS> Whats the "kernal" in WIN?
Maybe KERNEL32.DLL ? It sits there with IO.SYS and does whatever.
SL> fast = big.
JS> Chuckle.
Oh? Find me 10 examples where small = always fast.
SL> Hahaha! OS2 on a 486 w/16 meg is the same speed as Win95 on
SL> the same machine with 8meg.
JS> In your dreams.
Not really. The 486 is still sitting here. Win95 is still faster. I think
t's
the TCP/IP that slows OS2 down. But without LAN networking, it's useless.
JS> DOS was a BAD implimentation of the current level of OS technology when
JS> first sold to the HOME user.
And was the XT capable of much more? And were the user capable of more than
DOS as well? I don't think so. If DOS wasn't so easy to learn compared to
any Unix variant, old Steve Jobs would have gotten an Apple into every home,
rather than IBM compatibles. If this were the case, we'd ALL have to put up
with Apples.
JS> HOME user has been snookered ever since.
DOS served me well for a long time. It was a good stable system for a 286.
I think it's just you who can't handle CLIs, you need the pretty pictures
to click on.
SL> It's for so called power users that can't take a CLI. Oh
SL> sorry, OS2 is a CLI, WPS is a shell.
JS> Your statement there makes no sense to me, could you elucidate a bit?
Sarcasm. When I first arrived in here, I was repeatedly told that OS2 was
a true GUI OS. But I have since found that OS2 is a NON-OO CLI
based OS. WPS is a shell, and OO is all within the WPS.
JS> product. LINUX as I understand has met the POSIX standards to be
JS> considered UNIX
It's considered a UNIX variant, not UNIX.
SL> Perhaps if OS2 had applications of the calibre that Windows
SL> has, people (eg. me) would use it.
JS> I know, Egghead is loaded with "high calibre" Win junkware.
And you point is... ? Since when is Windows software junk?
JS> 90's software running on 80's code
And the source is this wonderful information is... ? Are you telling me that
when you wrote version X+1 of one of your programs, you never stole a bit of
code from version X? Functions such as CRCs, logfile routines, file format
conversions and other such tasks don't really need to be rewritten all over
again in a new version. It's quite safe to copy the basics from an old
version and speed them up a bit if possible.
JS> Win software is mostly crap, no matter when it was written.
It doesn't matter when it was written. Even win16 programs weren't too bad.
Win32 programs are much better than their Win16 equivlents (just look at
something as common as Word).
I've found most Win95 software to be a lot better than OS2 software. In a
commercial situation, OS2 and Win95 software don't have many differences, but
at home, the range and features of Win95 software exceeds OS2 software.
JS> Really? I remember reading articles that 50% of the folks owning WIN
JS> didn't use it, and 30% of those didn't like it.
Who cares what you read? I'm sure you have the same opinion whhen I tell you
I read in last months issue of the APC stated that OS2 was dead.
Unfortunatly the Mac is still alive, according to them. I would have much
preferred it the other way around.
JS> pirate an OS that came with every PC sold to the home user,
The last whole computer I bought was a 286. Since then I've built all my
computers. My 286 didn't come with windows either. So i had to actually go
and aquire Win myself.
JS> much is the computing public in the home market has become even
JS> dumber.
Yes, thats true.
JS> they bought, which they had/have NO CHOICE in removing even when smart
JS> enough to want something else.
Why not? It can be removed no worries.
