Maybe I am one of the exceptions to the rule but I have used an external 14K4 
modem with a 16MHz 286 pc and a 16450 UART for years without any problems.
I even know of people that have used a 28K8 modem with an XT and a 16550 UART 
quite succesfully both sending and receiving...
