I think those are cases of evolution filling environmental niches.

As a matter for fact, I'm not sure what "devolution" means, or if
it exists at all.  I think that Geo uses the term to mean moving from
complexity to simplicity, but that is simply an evolutionary process
selecting a more viable solutions.
