Typical news "dumb down". True, ruminants such as sheep and
cattle produce a lot of methane gas. But it's produced in the first two
stomachs and almost all of it escapes back through the oesophagus. In
short, it's belched, not farted.

This is old news to me and other NZers, there has been a lot of research
done here on emissions from sheep and cattle because the sheep and cattle
in this country outnumber the people by 12 or 13 to 1. Being a Kyoto
signatory (no, I'm not opening that can of worms again), we needed to
quantify the country's production of greenhouse gases (methane is one). I
dare say a Google search argument including "New Zealand",
"sheep" and "methane" will produce plenty of hard
numbers on the exact environmental impact.
