Well, WBW (Way Back When ), that & TOS was all there was.  Since
the networks weren't going to buy off on a prime-time Trek, GR "took
it to the kids," essentially (a lot of them had also been somewhat
disenfranchised by NBC's move of Trek to the "death slot" of 10 at
night for its last season. ).  It served a two-fold purpose,
though, bad as the show seems in retrospect.  One, it kept Trek alive
as a presence long enough for demand to catch up & TMP to be
released, & second, it added some to the audience base that would be
around to buy theater tickets when the show did come out. Leave us
face it, while Trek fans are about as rabid as they come, selling to
only the hard-core market (even with the revitalization the show got
in syndication in the early 70s) isn't going to be fiscally sound
for a studio.  Broaden the audience, though, & you might well have
a winner. :)
