I was referring to software which will not run even when SETVER is used.
Programs which abide by the "rules" should run with later versions of
DOS, but may require SETVER. Programs which take advantage of
undocumented features of DOS may be just plain incompatible with later
and different (e.g. OpenDOS) versions. Those are the ones which have to be
ditched when you upgrade.
As far as I know, just about all versions of Ensemble can be run with
later DOS versions by using SETVER or editing GEOS.INI.
