subject: Buy which modem?

GR> I'm in the hunt for a new modem. In order to connect in near
GR> future to the net, I have to part from my old but trusted Avtek V32+.
GR> It didn't miss a beat but 9.6 is just not fast enough.
GR> I would like from you some hints what to buy. Stop, I take this back.
GR> I would like you to tell me which modem NOT to buy as you had a bad
GR> experience with the modem it self or the customer service.
GR> Many thanks in advance,

I have tried USR Courier, Netcomm M34F and Spirit Viper, and
wouldn't recommend any of them. The best advice is to wait,
to see if someone is going to do something about fixing their
problems. For outgoing data calls, I would say that the Viper
was the most reliable of the three I mentioned. For use on a
BBS, the USR was the most reliable by virtue of the fact that
it was the only one that didn't have a lockup in the time that
I used it (that could just be stats though, as I came within an
ace of reporting exactly the same thing about the Viper). You
can't do anything about a lockup. You might find a second-hand
14400 is far better value for money. Find out just how much
money you expect to save in phone bills with a 28.8k, and then
see how many years it would take to pay for itself. BFN. Paul.
