Most officials in most countries have always viewed freedom of the individual as only necessary if the alternative is social unrest etc. i.e. all freedoms were fought for & have to continue to be fought for because frankly they are pesky & hampering to those in power. > This was simply another excuse > (no different from the imposition of the War Measures Act in Canada > after two kidnappings and before the murder of a government minister who > had ties to organized crime). > Oh indeed except that this was a "global threat requiring a global response" which is usually a code phrase for internationalizing an issue...i.e. "Obviously if it was just us we'd not introduce these measures but...with th world being the way it is.....& our allies, friends & partners....." etc e.g. all the "biometric" passports etc. > The Ministry of Peace, war with Eurasia/Oceania ... there's nothing new > here. Indeed not. Babylonians probably had these arguments. "Those dam freedom for Ur terrorists...." However that only extended as far as the fertile crescent. Now there is really nowhere you could go to be free. > Santayana is correct -- and those who want > democratic-totalitarian control over the others haven't learned that > theirs is a stuggle doomed to failure probably because they aren't the > ones paying the cost. > Chuckle. Things change. The ease & prevalence of surveillance & esp linked databases is steadily changing the dynamics. these things: http://washingtontimes.com/national/20070308-124323-4382r.htm Are both becoming common & are being linked. Initially it's (surprise surprise) to "address a global problem" i.e. immigration/migration & it's concomitant factors such as "people smuggling" etc. Very neat as while traveling apparently no one has any rights & so this can be "trialled" on "those in motion".
