As for the trains ... for quite a few years, the vista dome cars on VIA 1
(The Transcontinental) went through the Rockies in the middle of the night.
 Yup - middle of the night.  Passengers represent trivial revenue to the
railways compared to freight so the schedules were set up for freight and
the passengers got what was left over.  That seems to have changed.

Always wanted to the Rockies trip, the Blue Train (in SA), and the Ghan (in
Oz).  I did the TraNZalpine (in, natch, NZ).
