I've been calling Fidonet that since I first "joined" as a point
back in 1996.

In several echoes that's still very much the case.  Check out FTSC_PUBLIC
around FTSC election time (November-December every year).  You'll see more
sh*t-slinging in there than primetime at the monkey cage at the zoo.  Yet
the FTSC wonders why it considers itself still relevant while the rest of
Fidonet thinks it's a joke...

Fidonet has always been controlled anarchy, just like USENET.
